Card or bank transfer: the cheapest way to buy crypto

How payment methods change the cost of buying crypto, and when paying by card is worth it.

Bank transfers are usually cheapest

Most exchanges accept bank transfers in their main currencies for free or a small fixed fee. Local instant payment systems, where supported, combine low cost with speed.

Cards cost more

Card purchases commonly cost 2% to 4%, and some card issuers treat crypto as a cash advance with extra fees and interest. Check your card terms before buying.

Watch the currency

If the exchange does not accept your currency, your bank or card converts it, often with a markup of 1% to 3%. Choosing an exchange that takes your currency directly removes this layer.

When a card makes sense

A card can be worth the extra cost for a small first purchase when speed matters. For regular or larger purchases, a bank transfer in your own currency almost always wins.
