United States: how to buy crypto and what it really costs

Before you buy crypto from United States, check three things: what the local rules allow, which exchanges accept residents, and what the full cost will be once spreads, deposit, conversion and withdrawal fees are added. This guide covers all three.

How to buy crypto, step by step

  1. Check that the exchange is licensed or registered to serve residents of your country, using the regulator's public register when one exists.
  2. Create an account and complete identity verification. Regulated exchanges are required to verify who you are.
  3. Deposit money. A bank transfer in your own currency is usually cheapest; cards are fast but often cost 2% to 4%.
  4. Buy with a limit order where possible. A market order or an instant 'buy' button can include a wide spread.
  5. Decide where to keep your crypto. If you withdraw to your own wallet, pick a low-cost network your wallet supports and send a small test first.
