Indonesia: how to buy crypto and what it really costs

Before you buy crypto from Indonesia, check three things: what the local rules allow, which exchanges accept residents, and what the full cost will be once spreads, deposit, conversion and withdrawal fees are added. This guide covers all three.

Crypto rules in Indonesia

Restricted
  • Buying and holding crypto is legal.
  • Crypto is not legal tender.
  • Only locally licensed platforms may serve residents.
  • Websites of unlicensed foreign exchanges are blocked.
  • Banks may not serve unlicensed offshore platforms.

Exchanges that accept users from Indonesia

10 of the 12 exchanges we track accept users from Indonesia. Exchanges that take IDR directly save you a currency conversion.

None of the exchanges we track accepts IDR directly, so your bank or card will convert the money first. That conversion is often the largest hidden cost, so compare it in the calculator.

How to buy crypto, step by step

  1. Check that the exchange is licensed or registered to serve residents of your country, using the regulator's public register when one exists.
  2. Create an account and complete identity verification. Regulated exchanges are required to verify who you are.
  3. Deposit money. A bank transfer in your own currency is usually cheapest; cards are fast but often cost 2% to 4%.
  4. Buy with a limit order where possible. A market order or an instant 'buy' button can include a wide spread.
  5. Decide where to keep your crypto. If you withdraw to your own wallet, pick a low-cost network your wallet supports and send a small test first.
